Governor Susana Martinez told KUNM Thursday afternoon that campaign dollars spent recently on radio ads were “the exact thing that it’s intended to be used for, and not taxpayer dollars, to get this message across.”
Martinez was responding to a question about the legality of spending money left over from her campaign on ads designed to pressure lawmakers to end the process of giving drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants.
Martinez said she’s not concerned about calls for an Attorney General’s office investigation.
“I don’t have anything to worry about in the sense of they were campaign funds,” she said. “Tax dollars were not spent in any way for any of that. And in fact the Secretary of State has said it was completely appropriate.”
Martinez stressed she was using the money to back up campaign promises on the immigrant drivers license issue.
The state’s elections code is under scrutiny around the expenditure.
